Stream issues!!! Arrrggghhhr!#$%@%$#

Please try the listen now button and report.
It works for me on multiple systems, but I'd like to know what circumstances don't let it work.
If it doesn't work, note the type of machine and OS, and browser and . . . REPORT!
Thanks to all for your feedback.
Together, we can make this work!

Updates

Hey I just thought I'd update everyone: I've fixed the "Listen Now" button and now it will issue a .pls file
which will play in iTunes and windoze media player and it's cousins. Also, the archive list of shows (podcasts) is now in alphabetical, date-descending order. Just so y'all know!
Enjoy the rest of term!

Now in MP3 flavor!

We're making the switch to MP3s, just so ya'll know.
It's better for most users so we can just download a podcast and put it right to our iPods, etc.
Just a heads up!

Hey ladies and Gents,

With regards to my show today here be links to OpenMedia.ca, Cracked.com and other stuff I was talking about today.

You can find the OpenMedia petition HERE: http://openmedia.ca/meter
DO IT!

You want more info other than my rants you can find info on why you should be adding your name to this petition HERE:
- Financial Post (some surprising comments in support here)

Welcome to the Umpteenth Installment of:

Sit Down, Plug In: Stand-Up
This Week's Theme:

Comedy Albums made in the 2000's that pertain to governmental pitfalls, advertising woes, societal problems etc. that still prove as relevant as ever

A.K.A
Laughing to Keep Away The Tears

This episode features two comedians.

First up:
David Cross

You may recognize him from many things
(i.e. Arrested Devlopment(rip), I'm Not There, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)

He's an actor-comedian constantly on the move

(also dating Traveling Pants of the Yaya Sisterhood superstar, Amber Tamblyn(wut?))

The long and short of it is, I like h
is voice. And his bald frankness.

I hope you enjoy his 2004 album: It's Not Funny

Cuz it's not.

Up Next

Hip to the square.

Marc Maron has also done an array of things, but mostly his AWESOME Podcast

He interviews an array of amazing people and things
with a dark perspective.

Plus, he's from Albuquerque.

LunchBox: Water, and other Fluids.

LunchBox now has its very own blarg, woo!
Expect to find playlists, recipes, and rants there every Wednesday.

On to more pressing matters....
... this week's installment of LunchBox included some sketchy Egg-Nog-Making-Advice that is Not-Very-Accurate and to be followed at your own risk. To make amends, I've posted a link for a real-legit (tha's'right) recipe that promises to be much tastier than the one heard on air. Yeehaw.

Cheers

Have Patience

The end of term is nigh and that means some show hosts may need to bow out in order to complete their final projects, etc. It's a crazy time of year but we're going to be starting out in the New Year with a bang.
There will be a new website/blog up for the spring term, but all the show archives will be on the new site. I hope to build a page for each individual show, but this will take some time. Have patience and have a great end of term. Get some rest over the holidays!

Who's ready for some not funny laughter? Some anti humor? ME? YO U? THAT KID? Good.

This week's feature: Neil Hamburger a.k.a Gregg Turkington a.k.a. T
he Hero a.k.a The Anti-Comedian

Neil Hamburger, an exotic, elu
sive member of the underground comedy world who has somehow managed to slide up to the commercial rankings of Tenacious D and Tom Green(both shows at which he got continuously booed and cheered simultaneously. ) or even Tim and Eric Awesome show(although that's not really a surprise ----> click)

He often opened up for bands like NOFX and Bad Religion, breaking into more of the music scene, which makes sense considering his "Real" identity bei
ng Gregg Turkington.
Gregg T. was a member and/or manager of several avant garde punk bads and contributed to the prolific zine meathead. A well rounded dude
.

So, for tonight's show, after careful consideration of the 20+ albums Neil's got under his belt, I've got two albums for ya:
  • America's Funnyman(1996)
  • Hot February Night(2007)
A pretty wide range of Mr. Hamburger's talents Hope you enjoy and this takes a little bit of school crunch time stress off yo cold shoulders

Episode 2: Maria Bamford::Unwanted Thoughts Syndrome

Hi everyone who has access to the internet!

Welcome to the second installment of

Sit Down, Plug In: Stand Up

(see what i did there? eh? eh??)

That's the name of the show. This week's wonderful, beautiful, eye-contact evasive comedienne is:
Maria Bamford.

Let's see.
You may recognize her(phy
sically or sonically) from:

  • Lucky Numbers
  • Stuart Little 2(the better one pfft)
  • Catdog
  • Hey!Arnold
  • The Comedians of Comedy
(which if you haven't seen, SHAME. It's totally algebraic.)
  • And so many other things!

Ahem. You'll notice that the previous list is filled to the brim with links, a skill i just discover (Hey, 21st century people, I'm new to blogging, ok?) Wonderful, wonderful LINKS, so I can let the internet talk for
me. It's like an internet trea
sure hunt! CLICK TO EXPLORE.
Or,
whatevs.

SO
. Maria Bamford

Is awesome. Her style is, as I mentioned before,
evasive. Yet direct at the same time. Her voice inflection and variation, nervous stance and fearless dive into all things insecure and not quite wanted(which she coins as Unwanted Thought Syndrome) make her a hero. She works both as a comedian, voice actress, and live action actress. And she grew up in Deluth, Minn. Which is nice.
I've combined both one of her recorded sets followed by a mishmash of clips I purloined from the internet
.
Enjoy!

Next Week: Tig Notaro

National Campus Radio

A small, but juicy update: the National Campus Radio Association has responded to my query and will be looking into our station to determine if we are a fit for this association. This is our chance to impress and really reach out and potentially increase our presence and scope.
While I'm excited about the possibilities, I'm somewhat discouraged that all the scheduled shows (11 of them) except three (Gogophony, Mark DePaul's show, and Jill Silva's comedy show) have yet to actually do a show. Thanks, Jill, for contributing to the blog!!!!
So, I'm busy archiving and listening through hours and hours of silence. Kinda lame, seriously boring. So come on, if you've signed up for a weekly show, do the show. If you can't commit, and I understand totally the rigors of school, work and family, then maybe a weekly spot isn't for you. In that case, just come in when you can and do one-off shows. They still get broadcast and streamed, just not archived on the blog.
Thanks again to those who have worked hard to get things going this year; let's get it off the ground!
Matt

Episode 1: Patton Oswalt & The Beginning

Plug In, Sit Down: Stand-Up
Tuesdays, 7-9pm

Hi World,
Welcome to the show.
Need a break from the stress of work/school/law breaking/portfolio managing/economic apocalypse/Ryan Seacrest/Final Cut Pro fails/physics class/theology/ideology/tautology/ drug-induced hysteria/classism/sexism/facism/racistism/ismismissives?
Well, welcome home.
I (Jill Silva(please don't approach me)) will be starting a new show on this wonderful platform called Radio Free Emily.
It's green for wisdom and prosperity.
This two hours of side-stitched bliss will contain: One Featured Comedian Each Week, and Several Selfish Plugs Made By Me on This Here Blog.
So, in short: tune in for some laughs from some edgy mo-fo comedians.
A little bit about the layout: I will be compiling both released CD's and internet bits to fill my one-hour(although maybe it will be two) radio wave slot of some of my favorite stand-up artists workin in the grind today. If you have any comedians you'd like to see feature on here, give me shout and some clips and maybe we can arrange something.
This First Episode is:

Patton Oswalt

You may recognize him as the disheartening side kick from King Of Queens, or as the delightful, life-filled voice of Remmy in Ratatouille, or his recent indie stint Big Fan, or the blue collar fan in Man on the Moon, or Dollhouse or The Sarah Silverman Program or Flight of the Conchords or on Best Week Ever. Basically, this man is everywhere. He also sporadically does voices for several cartoons, as well as dabbles in writing and bookmaking(czech out the Serenity Comic currently lighting up the shelves: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=25748)

You may have stumbled across his website:
http://www.pattonoswalt.com/
(yeah, he's coming with a book it's gonna be AWESOME. You should follow my internet feet steps and preorder one too)

Or cyber stalk him on twitter:
http://twitter.com/#!/pattonoswalt

I would love to give a shortened bio of his life thus far other than his work, but personally, I think the fun of consuming comedy is within the personal tidbits you learn on stage(or on headphones, in yo case)
Let it be known, however, that he is one sassy man with a biting style and rampant opinions at which I often find myself nodding and laughing simultaneously.
I hope you enjoy.

Welcome Back

Stay tuned, there just might be a ton of new shows headed your way.
We're lucky to have folks who are energetic, creative, and enthusiastic and one student this year fits that description perfectly. Darren Devlin, a 2nd year student of the ECU Film, Video & Integrated Media program, has come forward with a wealth of new ideas and energy for the radio station. He and I will be putting our heads together and coming up with new shows and ways to utilize this great, currently underused, resource.
If you're a student of ECUAD, and want to get involved, email Matt Stephanson at mstephanson@ecuad.ca to arrange a meeting.
Check back soon to see and hear what's going on.

Gogophony, Another New Show...

I'm very pleased to announce that we have another new show on Radio Free Emily. The show is called Gogophony and will be hosted by ECUAD student Gökçe Erdem, Fridays from 5-7pm. She's got some great, fresh tunes to share with us all, so tune in, listen, and leave a comment!
BTW, today is the opening of the 2010 Olympics and, well, let the games begin.

The Auditory Nerve is Firing.

2010 is looking good, despite the olympic chaos and RFE has another regularly scheduled show called "The Auditory Nerve."
This will follow the Carb Radio spot and will run every Thursday from 6-7pm. There's also another show on the way, probably starting in two weeks and will be a regular spot as well. My goal is to have the radio spots filled and have sonic stuff being streamed and broadcast all day, every day. It is a process and nothing happens over night, but interest is certainly growing.
If you're a follower of the RFE, show your support by making comments on the blog and even spreading the word to your friends about RFE. The more buzz that exists, the more we can do with this awesome resource!
To the broadcasters: keep up the excellent work and keep bringing us interesting and stimulating shows.
All the best...
Matt

See you in 2010!

Today is the last day of work at ECUAD for nearly 2 weeks! I think we all need the break and we'll come back refreshed and renewed. Raf, a FVIM Tech, and I put up walls around the radio workstation in the South Building and while it's a bit tight in there, it makes the space a bit more cozy and better isolates the radio from the rest of the audio lab. We're making baby steps to a better station, one foot then the other. I've added an automated archiving system that I can control with schedules, so no more missing episodes (unless the archiving machine crashes)! Bobbi Kozinuk, a Tech in IDS, came in yesterday to fine-tune the transmitter for the AM part of our broadcast. It sounds great if you're near the island and tune into 88.59 AM.
Anyway, thanks to the few followers we have gained and I wish the best for everyone in the new year.

Hope for the Future

Well the first semester is drawing near to the break and we've had a few technical challenges to overcome. I will be doing a bit of work over the Christmas break, trying to improve the workflow of the RFE station. We do have biggish plans for the future of RFE and have been talking about moving it to the North Building into one of the sound suites. This would be much better for broadcasting and would have the effect, we hope, of drawing more students into the possibility of doing a show or two.
If you have any ideas or suggestions, please send me an email at mstephanson@ecuad.ca and we'll compile all the input and look at the possibilities.
So far, we've just had a few installations using the radio, and an ongoing show by Carb Radio, heard on Thursdays from around 4-6 pm. Those guys play great tunes and have a natural, informative, and sometimes comedic sense to their show. You should tune in to check them out, or check out the archives for past shows.
Let's hope 2010 will be a great year, and let's strive to move forward: GET ON THE AIR if you're not already!!! It's fun and gives you experience that's unique and somewhat difficult to get.

Keepin' on

We had a spot of technical difficulty with our archiving machine and missed Carb Radio's second show. :(
The first show is up on the sidebar under Past Shows Archive.
Check this spot for recordings of our past shows. They've been brutally compressed and do not really reflect the original quality we broadcast and streamed the shows at, but it does have the content.

First Show Coming Up!

We've had our first booking for RFE today! Corey Poluk and Gab Koenig have done a regular show in the past and are now back with their first show airing (and streaming) this Thursday from 3:45-5:45 pm. This will likely be a weekly show, so keep your ears tuned in for these guys. You can read their own blog here Carb Radio.
Just a reminder that we want more material and volunteers to participate. If you want to do a show, just sign out a key from AV and speak to Matt or email him (link at top of site) in FVIM about booking a time.
That's it for now.
Later Days,
Matt

We're on the air!

Welcome to Radio Free Emily 2009/10, brought to you by Emily Carr University of Art and Design!

What is RFE?
Our local low-power radio station broadcasts around Granville Island on the FM band at 88.5 and is also streamed over the internet. Our content is provided mostly by students, playing their own projects, music mixes, poetry and speech, and whatever else they want to play.
The station is also used for art installations, providing a way to bus sound around campus, into various galleries and exhibits.

Get Involved!
If you're a student at ECUAD, getting started in the world of RFE broadcasting is as easy as signing up for a slot on Station 30 (broadcast booth in 406B). Sign up sheets are located in room 406. If you need technical assistance with the broadcast booth, see Matt Stephanson in the FVIM area, or email him mstephanson@ecuad.ca for more info.

Spread the Word!
Let your friends and family know about RFE and the fact that you've got a show coming up that they can tune into. It's a great way to get your stuff out there in the ether and on the web.
